With a grand slam in the top of the 8th inning today, Billy McKinney now sits at 4 homeruns, 11 rbis, to go along with 6 walks. The 6’1 205lb Texas native has an on base percentage of .522 and an OPS of 1.584, video game numbers. Granted, it’s only been 16 total plate appearances, and granted, it’s Spring Training. However, McKinney has already shown he can handle every level of baseball he’s faced so far. Although he put up a .250 avg with 6hr and 29rbi in 69 games in AA Trenton last year, McKinney actually hit .306 in 55 games in AAA Syracuse. In Syracuse, he hit 10 more home runs, added 35 RBIs, and actually struck out less frequently than he did at AA. The question: is 55 games at AAA a big enough sample to justify a jump straight to the big club? Currently, the Yankees already have a backlog of outfielders fighting for time at the major leagues. McKinney is off to a great start, and I’d love to see him force his way into the lineup this summer. However, I think the Yankees will let him get a bit more seasoning in Syracuse in 2018.
